Duck River Restoration, June 26, 2022
Eighteen volunteers gathered on a warm Sunday morning to continue restoration work at Duck River Cemetery. Advised by Michael Carroll, founder of Rediscovering History, the group cleaned 21 gravestones, re-erected five, excavated one, and prepared three for re-setting. With rain expected, they spread grass seed around repositioned grave markers. The project that started a year ago in May 2021 has had a significant impact in Duck River’s Ancient Section. Inscriptions on sandstone, slate, and marble grave markers once obscured with stains and lichen, are now legible. Fallen or tilted headstones stand upright, the initials on long-buried footstones are visible, and the artistry of Connecticut’s early carvers can be admired and studied.
