Boy Scouts Place Flags Honoring those who served their country

Members of Boy Scout Troop 26 gathered at Duck River Cemetery on May 25, 2023, to place 500 new flags at the gravesites of Old Lyme veterans.

Following brief remarks by David Griswold, Post Commander of  VFW Post 1467, who described the seriousness of their task in honoring those who have served their country, the Boy Scouts in groups of three gathered flags and spread out across the cemetery’s eight sections. At each gravesite Boy Scouts placed a new flag, saluted the deceased, and thanked the veteran by name for his or her service.

The Old Lyme Cemetery Association provides new flags each year to VFW Post 1467 in preparation for the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Duck River flagpole that concludes the town’s celebratory parade.

The Memorial Day ceremony, held this year on May 29, honors those from the town who died while serving their countryThe ceremony included readings by the VFW student essay contest winners, a rifle salute, and the laying of a wreath at the Veterans’ Memorial. Music was provided by the Lyme-Old Lyme High School Band and Select Singers.
